Preserving Belize’s Flavors: UNESCO-Supported Workshop Safeguards Living Food Heritage
On 13 August 2026, the Belize Food Heritage Project successfully concluded its Cayo District-level workshop, marking another milestone in Belize’s national effort to document, safeguard, and celebrate its rich culinary heritage.
Participants explored the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and gained hands-on experience documenting a range of local food traditions that will contribute to the National Inventory of Belize’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, helping ensure that they are recognized, safeguarded, and celebrated for generations to come.
The overall project, focused on the country's foodways, aims to strengthen community capacity and create a comprehensive catalogue of Belize's diverse food heritage, which faces threats from globalization, urbanization, and climate change.
The project also seeks to support Belize’s sustainable development in safeguarding that food heritage and its associated culinary traditions, while promoting cultural pride, and enhancing disaster risk preparedness and resilience.
The initiative is supported by UNESCO, through the Intangible Cultural Heritage Fund, and is conducted and carried out by the Institute for Social and Cultural Research, which is part of the National Institute of Culture and History.
